Pagos de Familia Marqués de Griñon's philosophy is based on the fact that a good wine is born in the vineyard, making them pioneers in the implementation of state-of-the-art techniques in their vineyards, such as being the world pioneers in applying drip-irrigation in vineyards (1974). The Syrah and Petit Verdot vineyards were the first ever planted in Spain and their Cabernet Sauvignon and Graciano were the first to be planted in Castilla-La Mancha.
With the assistance of the famous wine-growing expert Richard Smart, Dominio de Valdepusa was also a pioneer in the implementation of state-of-the-art canopy management systems. Use of these advanced techniques enables uniform solar radiation of leaves and bunches, and consequently homogenous grape ripening. Thus grapes are obtained with a high polyphenol (tannin) and anthocyanin (colouring pigment) content. The result of these techniques are grapes with an excellent balance among critical factors like fruitiness, alcohol and acidity.
Carlos Falcó has also been a worldwide pioneer in the use of other advanced irrigation technologies such as organic irrigation based on pedicel analysis (1993), subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) or use of dendrometers (2000). All these technologies have enabled them to have an advanced application of a strategy known as deficient irrigation, which has a noteworthy impact on the quality of their wines. In fact, the combination of hydric contribution (rain + irrigation) received by PFMG vineyards is around 550 mm per annum, far below the usual in quality regions like Bordeaux (810 mm), Burgundy or Champagne, despite having considerable higher evapotranspiration rates.
At Dominio de Valdepusa each plot is managed according to its needs. The paths between lines are never tilled and retain natural grass cover to prevent erosion and respect the environment. Pruning and other cultivation practices vary annually to guarantee complete uniform ripening of the bunches.
